World Health Organisation: Non-Invasive and Effective

Riva Star and Riva Star Aqua are non-invasive dental treatments that are quick and easy to administer, making them perfect for children, the elderly and other challenging patients.

Riva Star contains SDF. Riva Star Aqua contains AgF – the latest SDF innovation by SDI. Both have the same indications for use in respective countries. While these indications can differ by country, the WHO has provided the following SDF direction.

The WHO recommended inclusion of glass ionomer cement and silver diamine fluoride preparations on the core list of essential medicine for the prevention and treatment of dental caries.

REVOLUTIONARY.
NO DRILLING. FAST.

Riva Star treatment is quicker and easier compared to traditional invasive treatment methods.

The Riva Star range delivers Minimal Intervention Dentistry that adopts the philosophy of integrating prevention, remineralisation and less invasive procedures.

Shown here is an overview of the steps to apply Riva Star Aqua using the bottle delivery system. Also available is an overview of the capsule delivery system.

Riva Star is a flexible addition to most treatment techniques. As shown in the Riva Star protocols, Riva Star can be used with glass ionomer or composites for a stronger, more complete restoration.

When to use Riva Star

FOR CHILDREN

FOR CHILDREN

Quick to apply. Riva Star range is an excellent treatment for wriggly and distracted children.

FOR OLDER PATIENTS

FOR OLDER PATIENTS

Easy to apply. Riva Star range is excellent for older or frail patients who require shorter treatments.

UNCOOPORATIVE PATIENTS

UNCOOPORATIVE PATIENTS

The ease of treatment, makes Riva Star range perfect for uncooperative or fearful patients.

Innovative Stain Removal

Unlike other SDF systems, the Riva Star two step procedure minimises the risk of staining.

By applying the potassium iodide solution (KI) over the silver diamine fluoride (SDF), a silver iodide creamy white precipitate is formed which then turns clear.

A protocol for all situations

The use of Riva Star and Riva Star Aqua can be tailored to the needs of the patient and clinical situation. A range of protocols exist; from quick treatments to stronger restorations with glass ionomer and sandwich techniques.

Traditional SDF Treatments

Traditional SDF treatments can leave unwanted stains, as shown below.

How it works

SDF has a proven clinical history of arresting caries and treating dentine hypersensitivity for over 50 years. Studies continue to confirm that a 38% SDF solution* can arrest dental caries by minimising the loss of minerals and collagen destruction. Furthermore, the high concentration of silver and fluoride ions inhibits the growth of cariogenic biofilms.

SILVER

Silver compounds are used as an anti microbial agent in dentistry for more than a century.

FLUORIDE

Works as a bacteriostatic effect to prevent the further demineralisation of tooth structure.

IODIDE

Potassium Iodide used in conjunction with SDF provides a powerful antimicrobial effect as well as reducing potential staining of teeth.

Systematic reviews suggest that clinicians could expect between 50% and 70% arrest rates after two applications of silver fluoride in preschool or primary school-aged children, respectively (Seifo et al., 2019). Arrest rates with two applications is higher.
