Riva Star and Riva Star Aqua are non-invasive dental treatments that are quick and easy to administer, making them perfect for children, the elderly and other challenging patients.
Riva Star contains SDF. Riva Star Aqua contains AgF – the latest SDF innovation by SDI. Both have the same indications for use in respective countries. While these indications can differ by country, the WHO has provided the following SDF direction.
* Turton B, Horn R, Durward C. Caries arrest and lesion appearance using two different silver fluoride therapies on primary teeth with and without potassium iodide: 12 month results. Clin Exp Dent res 2020;1-11.

Riva Star treatment is quicker and easier compared to traditional invasive treatment methods.
The Riva Star range delivers Minimal Intervention Dentistry that adopts the philosophy of integrating prevention, remineralisation and less invasive procedures.
Shown here is an overview of the steps to apply Riva Star Aqua using the bottle delivery system. Also available is an overview of the capsule delivery system.
Riva Star is a flexible addition to most treatment techniques. As shown in the Riva Star protocols, Riva Star can be used with glass ionomer or composites for a stronger, more complete restoration.
Unlike other SDF systems, the Riva Star two step procedure minimises the risk of staining.
By applying the potassium iodide solution (KI) over the silver diamine fluoride (SDF), a silver iodide creamy white precipitate is formed which then turns clear.
The use of Riva Star and Riva Star Aqua can be tailored to the needs of the patient and clinical situation. A range of protocols exist; from quick treatments to stronger restorations with glass ionomer and sandwich techniques.
Traditional SDF treatments can leave unwanted stains, as shown below.

Riva Star and Riva Star Aqua use an innovative 2-step process to reduce SDF staining. This provides patients with a more aesthetic and confident post treatment smile.

SDF has a proven clinical history of arresting caries and treating dentine hypersensitivity for over 50 years. Studies continue to confirm that a 38% SDF solution* can arrest dental caries by minimising the loss of minerals and collagen destruction. Furthermore, the high concentration of silver and fluoride ions inhibits the growth of cariogenic biofilms.
